Session #3:
Leading In Praise
Passages to Read and Consider:
Psalm 100; 148; Ephesians 5:18-21; Colossians 3:16-17; Hebrews 13:15
Discussion Points:
1. How important is the song service:
a. From a spiritual standpoint, i.e. our worship and relationship to God?
b. From a practical standpoint, i.e. in the overall context of the assembly?
2. How important is the song leader in relation to:
a. The song service, i.e. the “quality” and “uplifting value” of the singing?
b. The rest of the assembly, i.e. meditation during communion, attention to preaching?
3. What characterizes “good” song leading?
a. How can the congregation encourage and develop good song leading/leaders?
b. How can we maintain focus on worshipping God rather than on the song leader?
4. What characterizes “poor” song leading?
a. It is easy to be critical; how can we be constructive in dealing with poor leaders?
b. Should those that lead poorly be excluded from song leading responsibilities?
5. Discuss these practical points and questions on song leading.
a. How should new/unfamiliar songs be utilized within a worship assembly?
b. Must every verse of every song be sung? When might shortening be appropriate?
c. How important is the selection and leading of the invitation song?
d. How important is the selection and leading of the song before the lesson?
e. How important is the selection and leading of the song before the Lord’s Supper?
During worship are we mindful of the fact that our praise is being sung before the throne of GOD, and should be edifying to those around us?
