Dealing with Age and Aging

1. Discuss what the Bible has to say about aging.

a. What were the patriarchs concerned about before their death?

b. How might Psalm 71 be viewed as the Psalm of an Old, Righteous Man?

c. Is old age something to be feared, dreaded or despised?

            d. Does the Bible present old age as a time to “retire” spiritually from the Lord’s praise?

2. How do we deal with deterioration, aging and impending death?

a. How can/should a Christian man approach aging differently than an unbeliever?

b. How can a man deal with and overcome the natural fears and discouragement of aging?

c. What disappointments must old men often deal with when reflecting on their life?

3. What is necessary for men to remain strong: physically, mentally and spiritually?

            a. What happens to men who “retire from life” when they retire from their work?

b. Are there practical things that men can do to maintain physical and mental vigor?

c. How might old age present spiritual opportunities we may not have had before?

4. Where can purpose be found after youth and our career are over?

a. Why is it essential that men continue to have a sense of purpose, even in old age?

b. What can men do after they are old to remain useful in the Lord’s work?

Are we working to prepare our younger men both to assume the responsibilities carried by the old, and to face old age themselves one day?
